Dervish Ceramony in Cappadocia

Renowned as one of the most mystical dances globally, this ritual finds its origins and evolution through the inspiration of Mevlana (1207-1273). Mevlana was instructed in this practice by Şems-i Tabriz. In this context, the Ney (Reed Flute) Music serves as a meditative tool.

The Dervish Ceremony symbolizes a spiritual odyssey in the pursuit of love, truth, and the attainment of ‘perfection.’ As an individual embarks on this spiritual voyage, they return as a mature and perfected being, equipped to extend love and service to all living beings, transcending distinctions of faith, social class, or race.

The dervish experiences a spiritual rebirth symbolized by donning a hat (representing the tombstone of the ego) and a white skirt (signifying the concealment of the ego). As he removes his black cloak, he embarks on a journey and ascends from the earthly realm to attain spiritual maturity. Throughout each stage of the Sema, he keeps his arms crossed, symbolizing unity and bearing witness to the oneness of Allah. The Whirling Dervish Performance is composed of seven distinct parts, each carrying unique meanings, and is presented across two sessions.

This mystical ceremony, offering about an hour of profound experience, commences daily at 18:00. During the summer season, it is held both at 18:00 and 21:00. Following the ceremony, a religious drink known as ‘Serbet’ is offered.
